Incident Information

April 21, 2021

As reported in Timminstoday.com, the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Attawapiskat was burned to the ground.

On April 21, 2021 the church had been set on fire. It was 104-years old and had not been in use due to wood falling apart. According to Attawapiskat First Nation member Serena Koostachin, the church had been abandoned because of this. She was heartbroken to hear of the fire.

Koostachin explained that there was a lot of history and memories. She said the elders especially respected the building.

The church had six stained glass windows with an oil painting from the 1920s that was eight feet wide and twelve feet tall.

No known cause of the fire has been found as of yet.
